Learning Among the Elements

Fainting from heat. Flooded classrooms. Black mold in the library. Too many students are learning in buildings that blur the line between indoors and outdoors.

That’s why we created LEARNING AMONG THE ELEMENTS. This new report, crafted with nearly 20 middle and high school students from around the country, details what happens when climate change collides with outdated school infrastructure. State and federal officials have left students to confront climate change with little to no funding in buildings built nearly half a century ago– and students are done paying the price.

Whether they live in rural Alaska or coastal Puerto Rico, student contributors are shining a light on how their schools are being shortchanged, where investments are needed, and why inaction is no longer an option.

Desmayos por el calor. Salones inundados. Moho negro en la biblioteca. Demasiados estudiantes están estudiando en escuelas donde a veces parece que no hay mucha diferencia entre estar adentro y estar afuera.

Por eso creamos APRENDIENDO ENTRE LOS ELEMENTOS. Este nuevo informe, desarrollado junto a casi 20 estudiantes de escuela intermedia y superior de distintas partes del país, muestra lo que pasa cuando los efectos del cambio climático chocan con una infraestructura escolar vieja y deteriorada. Los gobiernos estatales y federal han dejado a los estudiantes enfrentando el cambio climático con muy pocos recursos y en escuelas que tienen casi medio siglo de construidas. Y los estudiantes están cansados de pagar las consecuencias.

Desde las comunidades rurales de Alaska hasta las costas de Puerto Rico, los estudiantes que colaboraron en este informe están alzando su voz para mostrar cómo sus escuelas han sido desatendidas, dónde hacen falta inversiones y por qué seguir sin actuar ya no es una opción.
